Earth Day – April 2025: How the UK Celebrated and How the Weather is Powering the Green Revolution

As Earth Day 2025 dawned under clear skies and mild spring sunshine, communities across the United Kingdom gathered to celebrate the planet and spotlight the crucial role renewable energy plays in our future.

This year’s theme, “Our Planet, Our Power,” emphasised global unity in advancing sustainable energy. Across the UK, the weather played a surprising but powerful ally in the green transition, with solar and wind energy reaching new milestones thanks to favourable conditions.

The Rise of Renewables in the UK

Over the past year, the UK has taken significant steps toward greener energy. In the 12 months up to January 2025, renewables accounted for over 40% of the UK’s electricity, with wind, solar, hydropower, and biomass contributing to this shift. In fact, 2024 marked a historic achievement, with renewable sources powering over half of the nation’s electricity needs.

This Earth Day, it’s not just the activists and schoolchildren planting trees or picking up litter — it’s also about the science and technology capturing the energy flowing freely around us.

Sunniest March Sets the Stage for Solar Success

March 2025 entered the record books as the sunniest ever recorded, clocking in 185.8 hours of sunshine. That sunny streak spilled into April, setting the stage for a major milestone in solar power.

On April 1st, between 12:30 and 13:00, the UK hit a record high for solar energy output: 12.2 gigawatts, enough to power over 3 million homes. With bare-leaved trees and cloudless skies, it was a bright reminder of solar power’s growing influence — even in a country not always known for sunshine.

Scotland’s Windy Edge

While the South basked in sunshine, the North leaned into its breezier strengths. Scotland remains a global leader in wind energy, home to some of the largest wind farms outside the US and China.

Despite temporary shutdowns during January’s Storm Eowyn — where turbines powered down automatically to avoid damage — wind still delivered 49% of the UK’s electricity that day.

Scotland’s position among the world’s top 10 offshore wind markets, according to Offshore Wind Scotland, showcases the nation’s momentum in tapping into one of its most abundant resources.

Hydropower: A Rising Force Amid Climate Change

Though making up just 2% of the UK’s energy mix, hydropower is getting renewed attention. The British Hydropower Association argues it offers a dependable, flexible energy source — especially valuable when skies are grey and the air is still.

With the UK facing wetter winters and more extreme storms, hydropower may also help manage river levels and reduce flood risk, offering a double dividend for a climate-challenged future.

A Future Written in the Wind and Sun

Earth Day 2025 wasn’t just about reflection — it was about action. From record-breaking solar output to wind power’s resilience during storms, the UK’s weather is increasingly working in harmony with the push for renewable energy.

As energy storage technology advances and infrastructure expands, the nation’s ability to capture and use this natural power continues to grow. And while the challenges of climate change remain real and urgent, this Earth Day gave many a reason to hope — and to believe that with the right tools, the power to protect our planet might be blowing right through our backyard.

Conclusion

Earth Day 2025 highlighted more than just our commitment to the environment — it showcased the real potential of the UK’s natural weather patterns to power a cleaner, more sustainable future. From record-breaking sunshine to gale-force winds, nature is providing the momentum we need to shift away from fossil fuels. As we continue to invest in renewable technology and storage solutions, the UK is not only weathering the climate crisis — it’s beginning to thrive in spite of it. This Earth Day serves as a timely reminder: our planet holds the power — it’s up to us to harness it wisely.
