UK Solar Smashes Records Twice in 48 Hours

The UK’s transition to a high-renewables grid reached a fever pitch this month. As a high-pressure system brought clear skies across the British Isles, solar generation didn’t just break the national record—it shattered it on two consecutive days.

The Double-Record Run

On Monday, April 6, the UK grid saw solar output hit 14.1GW at midday, edging past the previous high of 14GW set in the summer of 2023. However, that milestone lasted less than 24 hours. By Tuesday afternoon, generation peaked again at 14.4GW, providing a massive surge of low-carbon power that significantly reduced the need for gas-fired plants.

The Big Picture: This solar surge follows a record-breaking wind performance late last month (reaching 23.9GW), bringing the UK closer to its goal of a zero-carbon electricity system by 2030.

Springwell: A New Solar Titan

Coinciding with these generation peaks, the government has officially granted development consent for the Springwell Solar Farm in Lincolnshire.

Developed by EDF Renewables and Luminous Energy, Springwell is set to become the UK’s largest solar project. It is designed to generate enough clean electricity to power roughly 180,000 homes. The approval is a strategic win for the Labour government, marking the 25th major clean energy project greenlit since 2024.

Energy Security & Policy

Energy Minister Michael Shanks emphasised that these large-scale projects are essential for shielding the British public from the volatility of international fossil fuel markets.

Beyond massive farms, the government is also pushing for “plug-in” solar accessibility and has mandated that new homes built from 2028 must include solar installations as standard.

Quick Stats: Solar Surge

  • New Generation Record: 14.4GW (Set Tuesday, April 7, 2026)
  • Project Approval: Springwell Solar Farm (Lincolnshire)
  • Capacity: Power for ~180,000 homes
  • Wider Progress: 25 major clean energy projects approved since 2024
